Barks and Rec

Barks and Rec: Gift a Dog a Break from the Shelter!

Barks and Rec is a day trip program for KHS shelter dogs to get a break from their kennel for a day, get out and experience new things, and making new human friends along the way! Not only is this program beneficial for enriching the lives of our shelter dogs, it also gives the shelter more information on how our pups do out and about so we can help better support them throughout their adoption journey!

Program opening soon- check back for updates on how to register!

Getting Started!

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older to check out a dog, or 10 years and older with a parent guardian. *Please review our adoption age recommendations for our dogs to determine which ones would be the best fit for younger family members joining on the day trip.
  • Must review and sign Day Of Volunteer Agreement at time of check out.
  • Must review and sign Barks and Rec Outing Agreement at time of check out.

As we introduce this program, all Barks and Rec opportunities need to be signed up ahead of time to give our Behavior and Volunteer teams enough time to review our current dog population and set you up with the best match possible!

To help support our shelter operations, we have a suggested donation of $15 for taking a dog out for a Barks and Rec activity, however we truly feel this experience for our shelter dogs is priceless, creating a lot of wonderful memories and opportunities for our dogs to experience the world around them!

Appropriate Dog Outings

We do encourage the following activities to give our dogs a chance to connect with you on your time out and about while giving them some agency to explore the world around them!

  • Visits to quiet parks on a long line
  • Walks with buddy shelter dogs (requires two separate vehicles)
  • Beach walks and long line water playtime
  • Local hikes
  • Pup cups!

Barks and Rec is focused on creating unique and special outings for our shelter dogs, allowing them an opportunity to experience activities outside of the shelter setting. To help ensure the success of KHS dogs on their Barks and Rec outing, we do not allow the following activities on their outings.

  • Dog Park visits
  • Off-leash activities
  • Interactions with non-shelter dogs
